Wake up. Wash. Make Breakfast. Maybe a little TV. Out the door and off to another adventure.
For roughly 14 years, that’s been the routine. A routine of morning voyages that, when we first started, began with a little co-pilot that fit into my arms, making sounds from the carseat behind me.
Rides made up of coos and cries, of cartoon theme songs on a burned CD, classical music on the radio, music of The Monkees and The Beatles. Those song notes were soon joined not by coos but by words and sentences, stories, talks of toys, of TV, eventually of friendships, of challenges that come with growing up. The journeys started with the two of us but in turn our crew added siblings who joined in each morning venture. And their since the beginning was my little co-pilot.
Accompanying me on those treks every morning for 14 years.
Until now.
Those daily expeditions will still launch from the driveway every morning, but with the end of Middle School for our oldest, those morning voyages will now be minus one. No longer little. Taller than me, in fact (admittedly not a hard goal to meet) and heading off to a brand new chapter of life in high school.
Times, they are a-changin and boy, do they change fast.
